Album advert analysis - Georgina Lowles

This unconventional layout for an album advert is the key to its success; unlike most others it presents itself to be in the style of a film advert. It works well, as it grabs the attention in a slightly different way, as you see the band’s name “The Stone Roses” as a film title, which people would be intrigued by and would want to read further. The “20th Anniversary” is meant to mimic the 20th Century, which is a production name for a film company, so its like a play on words almost. Also the 0 in the 20, uses the lemon which is the stone roses iconic image, so this works well to aid familiarity.
It offers quotes from magazines which the band’s music would hold the right appeal towards, such as Mojo and Q magazine, which relates to the bands target audiences and what they would be reading. Using quotes from musically popular magazines gives the album support and provides the audience with information to form a good opinion on, as the album has got a clearly well recognised and sustained reputation.
The name and album name are in key focus, centred and in yellow font to connect them together, which by using a separate font colour to the right around it allows it to flow. You have red blue and white, which interestingly are the union jack colours, which link to the lower picture via the colours. The yellow font is the most relevant, the name of the band and album, but also important information at the bottom; the different ways you can own the album. At the bottom, in smaller print, in provided more details about the album, what songs are included, special tracks and music videos, but also a very important link; the bands website; which in this day and age, with technology guiding the way to the future, the website is the key to the success of sales.

This combinational balance of the band name with the credits and the background image, provides an idyllic layout which cleverly reflects the genre of the music. It is important to reproduce the genre and style of music, via the album advert, in order to draw the audience in.
The band name is placed on the lightest area of the image, to draw the eye in to the band name, it is also in largest text on the advert, again to gain attention towards the name. it is also using the iconic font, that labels the bands merchandise, which is a point of recognition for the band. The album title is below the band name “love is noise” is the name of one of the songs, most well known from the album, used again as a point of recognition. Below the titles are credits, this is an opportunity to add more information for the audience to learn about the release of the single or album. It offers how to download the single, the ability to buy it on vinyl, and also the website. Advertising more ways to access the band and its singles and albums is a perfect way to increase sales and popularity.

The layout of David Ford’s album A long time ago, is presented in a more traditional and conventional way. It is easy to gather the required information, almost as if it was bullet-pointed down the page. You get the release date, which is important for the audience to know when they can acquire the album. You then see an image, of which you can assume is David Ford, holding a guitar which will reflect the type of music he produces, he is also allowing you to see his fashion style which is important to potential fans. You then get his name and the album name, which is of course important, but from the information given, I can’t see any iconic recognition points of observation such as the font style or image, which may suggest he is a new or unrecognised artist.  Lastly you can see at the bottom of the advert is a 5 star rating from a newspaper. This has little relevance to the music business, which again lets you believe that this artist is un-established within the music business.

Music Album Analysis: Georgina Lowles

Music Album Cover Analysis:

Destiny's Child – Lose my Breath

For a girl band in the 90's, this was a rather conventional layout for an album cover. The band title is the largest font used on the cover, centred and brought to the font, in order to stand out but also catch the eye. The bold metallic shine on the font is reflecting the bands strong powerful influence of the “girl power”. The chosen font used is also the style of the bands font logo, so as expected it has been used. This shows continuity of the bands appearance, but also helps buyers look out for a recognisable product.

Lose my breath was chosen specifically as a title, in order to reflect the sexually and indulgence they want to present within the albums' songs but also imagery; also it was the most successful song on the album. This is written below the image is a shiny white font in order to relate and compliment the image.

The three singers are all in similar poses and costumes, but are are all portraying different emotions, via the facial expressions. Sexuality, Power and Vulnerability. This is highlighted through the Mise-en-Scene used; hats were originally seen as an iconic symbol for a powerful male, so the statement that is been made is that three female sexual icons portraying strength and dominance.

The use of no background is deliberately used in order not to take anything away from the picture and the titles. The focus is simply on the band title and the singers. They have also included a side extra, some of the more popular songs, “loose my breath” and “solider”, along with featuring artists such as “TI” and “Lil Wayne”. It also includes a website which is a way to advertise and publicise the bands profile further.

Beyonce – Dangerously In Love

This album was the most important release of Beyonce solo career, as she had just left Destiny's Child. This album had to make a statement and an impact in order to successfully display her as a soloist. Before she was not the centre of the attention on the cover, as there were three members, which had to be equally exposed, but also they were branded by the bands name. Here, you can see that she is the centre of attention, the first thing you see, and the thing creating the most impact.

The image itself can be broken down into four categories; sexuality, power, facial expression and body position. The sexuality she is expressing here is reflected through the close up mid shot of her semi-naked body, the mise-en-scene demonstrated here, shes alone looking at you with a salacious look in her eye; her body position is seductive and she expresses herself to be a temptress. Her facial expression is used to gain your attention as she is looking into the centre of the lens. Along with her body position, what she is wearing is demonstration her wealth, power and importance and again sexual appearance. Diamonds are a symbol of money and wealth; she is wearing a revealing top of wealth and power. She is also making fists with her hands, as she clenches it puts forwards the image of dominance and strength, a strong sex symbol.

The font used here, is the start of re-branding herself, and she uses this font as her logo font. The album name is also in the logo font, but interestingly the words dangerously and love are both in bold, which may be suggesting a new domain for beyonce. The position of the text is on her hips, so your eyes are drawn down her body and stopping on her hips. The font is very small in comparison to the picture, but this is done so that your focus is on her, and you remember and recognise her.

Beyonce – I Am... Sasha Fierce

This most recent album cover is completely different to her first cover produced, in many ways. The image uses a close up head shot showing her shoulders; this exposes a completely different
meaning showed through the image. She is not in a sexual or rude body position, though she has no straps or top visuable which may suggest nudity, but not in a salasiouse way. Her hair is back off her face, with minimal make-up warn and no jewellery warn, which shows beyonce stripped back to reveal a more real to life interpritation, or linking to the album cover; “ I Am... Sasha Fierce” a new identity. Her facial expression is black and neutrle, she is not being sudductive or aggressive, just passive and natural. This again could reflect the idea of adapting identity.

The photo is in black and white, which is a strong statement to make on an album cover, as conventionally you would expect to see colour. This is done to continue the theme of changing or gaining a new identity; you haven't seen Beyonce like this before, so this is technique to be different and out of the norm.

The Mise-en-Scene used is simple and is meant to appear natural; the religious symbol hanging from her wrist, resting on her name “Beyonce” reflects her beliefs which again is not something you would expect to see on an album cover for a pop artist.

The position of the album name is up the side, going virtically up, which is non-conventional of a cover. This non traditional layout is helping to reflect the idea of change. Her name on this album cover has changed logo fonts, before it was the same as “Dangerously in Love” but for this, it has changed. Yes another way she is reinventing or creating a new Beyonce, or a new identity.

Video Analysis: Georgina Lowles

Music Video analysis:

Wallis Bird – To my Bones

Within this music video, there are two scenes, which coincide with the song, and are edited to fit match on action. You can see the use of stop start animation developing patterns that eventually covers the wall, that begins to get more crowed as the song advances. There is a mid shot of the main singer with her face in four different boxes, each box is singing a different line and dancing in a different way. This effect is used well to show the fluency of the song, and is also used as a transition shot. This effect takes the scene from the home setting, to a scene of the singer playing the guitar and singing to the song. The stop start uses a verisimilitude style of editing, which works well to sink with the real life shots.
The word “home” is the first thing you see, which is used to set the style and atmosphere of the video; creating a nostalgic feel. Interestingly, it is also the last thing to be seen, which shows a sense of continuity but also, shows how the video has developed.

Here you can see the way that the word “home” develops, from the start where she begins the transition, to the end where she has gathered everything of importance within her life, all together on her wall. It also includes a frame of stop-start animation of herself performing.

Throughout the chorus, you see the singer performing at a party scene, but also you see her singing and dancing through the stop start animation of photos and snap shots. They also use words in the style of stop start animation on the wall, which as they are being sung, you can actually see the lyrics being wrote; adding deeper meaning to watch she is singing.
This music video does uphold some expectations of a traditional music video for its genre, but it does break the conventions in other ways. You see the singer with the band performing “live”, which is a convention of a music video that does not necessarily have a story line to follow. Ingeniously, it has embroidered a prominent theme, which is reflected through the narrative, created by the style of editing.

The All American Rejects – Move Along

This music video is produced incredibly well, as they have focused so clearly on two critical technical areas; the framing of the shots and continuity. The shots have a fixed framing, which works excellently to create a flowing form of stop start editing. Through the changing of the backgrounds and most importantly changing of the shirts, they are able to embed a type of story line. It is not a fixed one meaning interpretation, but allows audiences to understand what they will from the details provided. The visual displays alongside the lyrics, which are singing about moving along, help to guide the message.

These six screen shots are only a few frame shots that make up the extremely fast pace stop-start chorus. They are expertly placed together as each frame the man sings a different word, which makes the wave of words work well.

The fact they have used the main singer from the band, to play the main character in the video shows a convention which is usually seen in this type of genres’ music videos. The critic of this production is demonstrated throughout, and the high standard continues, right to the climax.
At this point, where the man is seen to be saved by hands of hundreds, relating to friends and family, you then see the “live” performance. This is also a very important element, as it shows the whole band performing, which is what the audiences really want to see from a band.
The Mise-en-Scene alongside the editing is extensively the key component in making this video what it is, the man sings every word in the song, which shows the flow of the video, but also he sings every word even as the scenes crosses over and switches with the next. This high pace editing works so well to create continuity, but also keeps up with the speed of the song. The lyrics sung guide the story, to create a match on action type of editing also, which combined with the Mise-en-Scene creates this brilliance

Oren Lavie – Her Morning Elegance

There is an intricate balance of technical fundamentals underpinning the mechanics of this video, which makes it work perfectly. The camera angle throughout the video is stood stationary at a high angled crane shot, which is also used to the same effect as an establishing shot. Although the stop start motion style of filming and editing does not appear to be smooth and flow from shot to shot, it has a much more raw quality to it.

Here you can see two screen shots, showing how they distinguish between the singer and the main character. The singer makes eye contact with the camera, but the woman never does, which helps to add construction and continuity to the video.

The Mise-en-Scene appears at first to be basic and lacking any depth, as it only includes one simple location and uses one character with a transient male singer, but the detail that is included is so incredible that it counteracts the limited visuals. By removing all excess information from the shot, adds a real depth to the video, almost making the audience hang on every transition of the scene within the bed, to see where they are being taken next. Although there is so real change of scene, there are massively obvious changes occurring as the song develops.
From seeing the girl dance in the clouds, on crystal white sheets to when she dives into the ocean and swims with the fish, on a deep blue sheet. Uses obvious elements such as sheet changes, breaks the video up and add direction.
Within this production, there are only a few flickers of noticeable conventions of a music video, as a result of the style of cinematography. The main one being that the story line is a reflection of the song and its lyrics, but also when the main singer appears as the dreamers romance, he does two things that the woman does not do. He makes eye contact with the camera, to single his presence out, but also sings the lyrics, which would fit with the “live” element of the video.
Interestingly enough, when I was researching this video online, it had such high numbers of supporters and viewers, but also many re-constructed and imitation videos, made in the same as this video, as thought it had set some form of trend in its diverse and modern ways.

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream Music Video Analysis - Helen

This video is based on the artist Katy Perry and her growing up in the town of Santa Barbara where the video is set.
A’ teenage dream’ is what is being shown in this video looking into this phrase on the internet and teenagers in.  Teenagers are shown to have their first love, have fun, hang out with friends, and go to school. All these elements are shown throughout the video which brings it back to the song lyrics ‘you make me feel like I’m living a teenage dream’
During the chorus the lyrics sing ‘Let’s run away’ which is a stereotypical fixation of what teenagers do or want to do when they want to rebel.
The lighting is crucial in this video as it stays the same all the way through. The brightness which is very light throughout the video symbolises the pureness that children have, but juxtaposing with the pureness is the scenes where the two main characters are getting intermit which shows the change from childhood to being a teenager.
The costume is very simple but still fashionable which is another element of being a teenager as they are very fashion conscious. The costume makes the lyrics come to life during the lyrics ‘skin tight jeans’ the lead female in the video is wearing jeans.
The camerawork changes a lot throughout the music video as there is close ups, zoom outs and panning shots. This is dissimilar to her morning elegance where the camera is practically the same all the way through. During the first verse of the song there is a close up on the lead males food as it is going down on the accelerator in the car. This is zoomed in as it is trying to focus on the adolescence and is reinterpreting the stereotype of young males being boy racers.
Also during the first verse there is a pan shot of the beach while the artist is in the car. The beach is also tied into the video later when they are playing around in the sea. The seaside is meant to be a fun place and later on in the video that is how it is being represents. The panning shot is also showing where the video is set and how teenagers act who live near the beach which the singer said to be a crucial part of where she spent her childhood.
There is slow pace editing where they are fooling around in the sea and running into the sea. It is a conventional element of all films to play memories in slow motion so this being showed with slow pace editing is replaying the memories all the teenagers in the video have got together and maybe the childhood memories they have together.
This is not the only place where slow pace editing is shown, it is also shown when the lead male is boxing with the punch bag. This slow pace editing makes you concentrate on his muscular physique as self image and being fit takes a key role is teenagers.
Another form of editing is being shown from the beach to the scene where the two main leads are getting
intimate. There has been this technique used to not make the video too inappropriate and hard to watch.

THE QUESTIONNAIRE QUESTIONS draft... - HELEN

Before making the questionnaire we came up with questions that would give appropriate answers for our video. This enabled us to pin point our target audience and give us some design ideas. The questions are as follows:

Are you: Male/Female

What is your favourite genre of music: R'n'B, Indie, Dance, Rock?
We decided on these four genres of music as these are the genres on Radio One Chart Show so they will be the most popular of this time as this is the moist listened to radio station in the UK.

Which one of these videos is most memorable, Foundations, Fascination, Telephone, Dog Days are Over, When you were young?
I came up with Telephone and When you were Young as when researching I looked at who won MTV video awards for their videos and these were two popular ones. I chose the Dog Days are Over as the original of this video is set in a forest which is our setting, I wanted to see if this genre of video had a memorable effect on the audience. The video Foundations was chosen as it uses an editing technique (stop start animation) which we want to use frequently throughout the video. The other music video Fascination is by the band Alphabeat, who have a similar genre of music to the band we are representing. ..

We chose the ages 18 and under as a category as this is our target audience mainly under 18.
I used a small gap between each other target audience group from 19-29 as these also are closer to our target audience than 30+ which is why that is a broader category.

What is your favourite band? .............................................

What is the most important detail of a music video? - editing, dancers, the band/artist, colour or lighting

We also chose to ask our target audience: Do you think Music videos are important?
As this is of key significance, if everyone answered no we would have the rethink on what to do.

To My Bones music video analysis - Helen

The sound and the lyrics of this song are very significant more so than in most music videos. At the start of the video is it being implied that the music is coming from the radio but then when the artist hammers in the beat of the music the whole song is brought to life. The lyrics are also brought to life through the way they are presented for example when the lyrics 'cook her dinners' are on there is a clip of a dinner being eaten through stop start editing. There is a very heavy drum beat throughout the song, when this is in more focus there is a picture shown on the drummer drumming to the beat of the music, emphasising the importance of the upbeat song. Like this when the guitar is in emphasis there is a lot of pictures of that or a close up of the artist playing her instrument.
The camerawork is also another key importance of this music video. The camera follows the lyrics in a way for example when it is going along to wall. It is also zooms into the photographs on the wall allowing the singer to be shown while she is singing; it also zooms in on significant lyrics that are being shown through the pictures. On the chorus where Wallis is with her family and friends the camera zooms out to show the whole crowd having a good time emphasising the lyrics 'oh life I love you'
The mise en scene and theme of the video is 'home' as at the start it is printed in big letters this theme is followed through right until the end of the video. At the end of the video there is a big animated scene of a town in the background, and then a campfire which has already been showed in reality of what is shown at the chorus. The lyrics are also repeated 'my home, my home, my home' here the artist is using the power of three to tell the audience how important her home is to her. The costume the artist is wearing is 'indie' and 'gypsy' which ties in to the camp fire and the artist decorating her bedroom at the start. The colour of the video is so important, at the start there is not but but as the song progresses so does the video and the colour of it. By the end the animation and the colour is so bright it brings you to believe how much the artist loves her life 'oh life I love you'
The editing is key in this as it is in 'her morning elegance' the stop start animation is yet another key factor in this video as it is used constantly the whole way through except the chorus'. The chorus using the cross cutting editing technique to from the animated fairytale like video to reality.

Her Morning Elegance music video analysis- Helen

Mise en scene is a crucial part of the video as most of the video is made up by this. The white is a key colour and constant throughout the video, another constant throughout the video is the lady in the video is wearing white and the bed is white. White is the colour of purity which links to the word 'elegance' from the song title. The black costume in which the singer wears makes him stand out from the black background as he should which shows a conventional twist to it. The whole video is shot in the bed which is just a typical bed with all props around it. All the props in the video such as the fish, and the birds, they are all made with clothes which are so simple yet so effective. This creates effect on the word morning as she is in her bed, which is a usual morning ritual and all the props are things that are to be found in the bedroom.
The camerawork is virtually the same the whole way through the video as it needed to be to show the scene. The shot used is a crane shot. There are two effective close ups during the video. One is where is is looking out of the train window which highlights the lady having her eyes closed bringing the question to mind, is this all a dream? The second close up is where she is in the water with the fish' which are made up of small socks. This close up emphasises the smile of which the lady is pulling making her to be pleasant and content.
The editing is the same the whole way through but makes the video so effective. The stop start editing reinforces the dream theme. As the stop start editing is unclear but you can still see what is going on this is similar to a dream. You can’t always remember what happened after the dream but while it is happening it is very clear.
The sound and the lyrics of the song are so important. The first main sound which signifies importance is the cello which the lady goes under. This is performed at the same time the bass cello comes in on the song. While she is on the train the lyrics match the action which is the same all the way through. The lady is matching up to the lyrics. The stop starting editing is in time and in the beat intervals of the song which makes it even more effective.
The video is very unconventional and very dissimilar to usual music videos. But the theme of the video is dreaming and routine which is what the video shows which is a convention of music videos as they do often follow a story which is what this one is doing. It is doing this by showing her morning routine; getting up, walking outside, going on the train. This then relates to the word ‘morning’ in the song title.

Helen Music Adverts

Gwen Stefani's poster picture is taken from the album cover but is a close up of her on the chair. This is concentrates more on her face and allows herself to empower the complete advert as the audience is drawn into this provocative picture of her. The way Gwen Stefani is modelling in picture is very seductive, which may be some connection to the word 'love' which is underneath her name and bolded as it is one of the four powerful words which make up her album name. The crown of which Gwen Stefani is holding ties into the theme of 'richness' which is one of her top ten single names. The advert is dominated by the colour white. White is normally signified as the colour which represents purity, but focusing on the way the artist is sitting purity may not be the key theme but more so a juxtaposition of what the album is really about. Red is the colour that usually signifies the devil and badness which is the colour which is on the artists lips. This can be showing the artists bad sides even though she is a pure woman?
The typography used is a serif font. 'Gwen Stefani' is hugely highlighted and bolded showing the importance of the artists name and also during attention to who she is. The font used looks old fashioned and has connotations to the way wealthier people used to write, again relating to the theme of 'richness' and the artists single 'rich girl'. 'Love. Angel. Music. Baby' all have full stops after them implying the importance of each word. The way the artist is sitting juxtaposes with the word 'angel' as it is not angelic and more provocative.
The  advert is conventional as there is the picture dominating the complete advert so you know instantly who the artist is, then there is her name and the albums name, all advertising the artist.

Madonna's poster picture is a bigger version of the photograph on her album cover, again like Gwen Stefani's.  As it is a shot involving the whole of Madonna's body it doesn't just concentrate on Madonna's face but on the whole of her body implying that the face is not the most important thing and you need to concentrate on the rest of it. As the advert is nearly all the artist is allows her to dominate all of it. The ways in which both artists are modelling in the picture is very seductive. Madonna is pulling a seductive face and has her legs open which may have similar connotations to 'hard' in her album title. The way the artist is binding her hands like a boxer may also have connotations to the word 'hard' as she is hard and strong. The background of the advert is pink, traditionally a colour for candy and a very famous kind such as candyfloss. This is reinforcing the 'candy' theme into her picture. Black is the only colour the artist is wearing, black is a dark colour mostly connected to rock or badness. As Madonna is seen at the 'queen of music' this can again imply that status through the colour she is wearing. The blackness of her outfit and the pink juxtapose.
The typography used is a san-serif font.  'Hard Candy' is the largest writing on the page showing the importance of the album name. The artists name is not even on the poster, this completely shows how popular and famous Madonna is as she is known everywhere, nobody needs to even see who it is because she is recognised instantly. 'And on the beat goes' implies how long Madonna has been around for.
The advert is unconventional in the way it does not even have the artists name but conventional in the way she is the centre of attention due to her picture of her and the album name also being another key focus as this is what needs to be advertised.
Unlike Madonna and Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry's advertising picture is not the same as her album cover. This picture is a close up of Katy Perry, as it is the first album the artist has bought out the artist is making you focus on the face so you remember who she is and shows the importance of her face.  As the advert is virtually just the artist’s face she dominates it. Unlike the other adverts this artist is not modelling in a very seductive way more so cute. As she has her hand by her face and is smiling sweetly, it is similar to something you do when you are around boys, connecting this picture to the album. But below the face it is showing the artist not to be wearing any clothes, relating her to the other two artists as it then becomes more seductive. This concludes that all female pictures have to be in some way provocative, as it is a key selling point. The artist has a mask on the side of her face, not in the usual place, implying that she used to be hiding behind a mask before but now she has come out and she no longer needs it, amplifying the artist’s confidence.  The background is leopard print and red. Leopard print used to be related with being an 'easy girl' but recently it has been in a comeback and having a 'big break' similar to what Katy Perry is doing. The red is used on her lips, similar to Gwen Stefani; both implying there is another side to each artist. Red is a colour that also signifies kissing, which relates to Katy Perry's first single 'I kissed a girl'
The typography used is a serif font for the words 'Katy Perry' this is the same font as what is used on her album cover, relating both of them even though they do not have the same photograph.  Underneath the artists name there is the name of the album cover in blue. This relates to the word 'boys' in the album name as blue is traditionally a boys colour.
The advert is very conventional as it includes the three things which album adverts always include, the picture of the artist, the album name and the artist’s name. It differs from some album covers as the picture used is not the album cover picture.

Helen Album Covers

The album ‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation’ by the Wombats
The typography used throughout this album cover is handwritten writing. This represents what the band is about and the music they are in as it follows an ‘indie cult’ theme. The writing is teenage like, targeting this album at a teenage audience who are generally the public of which that are following cults, so both tie into one another. The word ‘Pop’ is stuck over the album cover a couple of times. This word is emphasising the pop culture, in which the Wombats are part of as they are a popular band which entitles them to be the popular culture of today, again in the handwriting connecting a bond between the band and their target audience.
The album name ‘A guide to love, loss and desperation’ is repeated twice, once in the white sans-serif print and once again in scrabble like pieces on the shelves. This is emphasising the album name as it is repeated twice, signifying the importance of the album.
‘A guide’ is implying this is your guide which is making the audience member become an individual. This could imply that when you are listening to it the music can mean many things to different people but as long as you take away something from it then it doesn’t matter. This is making the album individual for the consumer. The layout used is a conventional layout as ‘The Wombats’ is placed in the top third and highlighted, highlighting the significance of the band name and grabbing the audiences attention. The album name is in the middle which is not always conventional but as the album cover has no picture of the band on this is the second thing which grabs your attention as you look at the cover. It is unconventional also as there is not picture but has pictures of toys, implying again the teenager in the band dedicating the album cover to the target audience.
Colour Bright colours such as pink are used which is a stereotypical colour for women, highlighting the fact that this album is not just for boys even though it is a boy band. The black is a major part of the album cover and is resembling the rock theme symbolizing the kind of music they are making.

This is Eliza Doolittle’s album “Eliza Doolittle”. The colours and patterns used on the album cover is similar to the pattern used in the writing of Eliza Doolittle’s first single ‘Pack up’ immediately linking the two covers together. With them both having busy patterns and colour in them it is representing the personality of Eliza Doolittle or representing the way in which she wishes to be perceived. The symbols in the picture have great significance for example the volcano erupting is there to display the eruption in music since Eliza Doolittle has come onto the scene.
The colours used are overall very bright again going back to how Eliza Doolittle wants to be perceived or maybe showing her perception on the world. The font used to write the album title and the artists name is a informal font, which ties in to her theme of informality which is being represented throughout the album cover. It is used in a conventional way as it is in the top third of the album cover, which is bringing emphasis to the name and even more so due to the fact she has no album name. The way Eliza Doolittle is being pulled along by the plane creates a a childish feeling which is shown also through the album art.The childish feeling being highlighted also by the immaturity and juvenile behavior of which Eliza Doolittle is showing due to the expression in her face and the album art she is surrounded through. This could could be a symbol to her music of being easy going and fun music which you can play around to, like she is in the album cover.

Katy Perry has taken a stereotypical and safe approach to her album cover for her first album, this contrasts with the title of the album One of the Boys which is not the stereotypical language of a lady Mise on Scene

Colours used :-
The background is busy as there is a cloudy horizon along with the white picket fence and the flowers, this contrasts with the backgrounds on Katy Perry’s first three single covers as they have block colours in the background with emphasis on the singer. The busy background could represent the busyness of the songs on her album whereas the single is just one song to concentrate on, which is why she chose the plain background. The background could link to the time in which the music will be played, they could be portraying that they want the music to be played at outdoor parties; barbecues in the sun. This is a similar setting to what is shown the background and from research on the album and from quotes from Katy Perry this is the genre in which she intended.

The two texts, in terms of colour, juxtapose (artist name/album name). The artists name ‘Katy Perry’ is writing in bright pink and serif, this is also outlined with white highlighting her importance as she is the singer of the album. The name ‘Katy’ is a popular girls name and adding the ‘y’ instead of the ‘ie’ is the uncommon way to spell her name, again this is showing her standing out from the crowd. But this name and the writing juxtaposes with the ‘One of the Boys’ album name, written in sky blue serif font. The blue is underlining the word ‘boys’ but juxtaposes because it is completely different to the ‘Katy Perry’ font and the way Katy Perry is being displayed on the album cover.

The trend of blue is used again in the artists clothing as she wears a pink crop top, emphasising her femininity but then she is representing the blue through her shorts which aren't seen as a stereotypical item of clothing for women to wear. This can be representing the artist as being unique and not following the stereotypical traditional roles of men and women. Also symbolizing the artists music of being for both boys and girls and reveals the her personality. This creates an unconventional artist image, as she is implying she has more power due to her lack of ability to follow the rules. This is highlighted even further by the title of her first single ‘I kissed a girl’.

The layout used in the single covers contrasts with the album showing the dominance the album has on the singles, as this is the one that holds all the songs. The top width of the cover is dominated by the artist’s name, which is the first thing seen. The picture of the artist dominates the centre of the album cover emphasising her importance. This is a very conventional approach to an album cover but the proven approach which gets the audience responding the best.

The camera angle used is a long shot on the album cover. This is showing what Katy Perry is very popular for, her beauty and her body which is one of her trademarks. Katy Perry is biting on the glasses in a seductive manner which will make it hard for the audience to keep their eyes off her and the fashion she has chosen to be shot in is representing her as a person.
